Let’s chat with Elk master Marnie

Elk has been in the Olive Home family for a few years now and is a much loved brand of our marnie elk head shotstaff and customers. The products have gone from strength to strength and continue to impress us each season.

The new season has just arrive, and It’s like Christmas for a 5 year old. We have had a quick chat to Marnie who is the master behind the Elk brand. She as talked about the inspiration for the new season and given us QLD’s some inside knowledge about the wonderful Melbourne.

Where did your inspiration come from for the SS13/14 collection? I took a photo along the Victorian coast of a sunset earlier in the year. The colours that reflected across the sky were brilliant, clear and so pretty. This photo was printed onto a silk scarf and formed the basis for our palette. You will see hints of these colours right throughout the range from the dusty blues and greens to the bright oranges and acid yellows.

Was it always a dream to become a fashion designer? Or was it something that you fell into? If you are a creative person you innately need to work in a creative environment – or have an outlet. For me the process was quite organic but the path felt natural. I am still driven and inspired by the people around me.

You work in such a fast paced creative industry, how do you motivate your self on a day to day basis? I am lucky to love what I do – that is the greatest motivation. Our growing team at Elk HQ has introduced many people with years of experience behind them at different brands. All comment on how unique Elk is. Much of this is down to the loyal clients we have – most of whom feel like they are a part of our family. This loyalty and closeness with our fans is another great source of inspiration.

Favourite thing to cook? I am going through a bit of Quinoa phase and love to make warm salads with it as the base.

Any chance we could have the recipe? Or is it top secret? Recipe – no such luck. Whatever you have in the fridge topped with creamy goats curd and lovely white balsamic is about as complex as it gets.

Next time we are in Melbourne we need to eat at, drink at and visit? Oh where to start! Let’s pretend you have 24 hours in Melbourne, as a North side girl here is what I would suggest:

Breakfast: South of Johnston for delicious eggs http://southofjohnston.com.au

Post Breakfast Shop: meander along Gertrude Street for independent designers, book shops and galleries

Lunch: Gorski and Jones in Smith Street for a big bowl of warm homemade pasta http://www.gorskiandjones.com

After lunch: a bit more shopping either along Smith Street, Johnston or Brunswick Street (all within waking distance of each other)

Pre Dinner Cocktail: Head into the city and pop into Siglo above The European for a lovely atmosphere and a special view of Spring Street (best in warmer weather)http://www.theeuropean.com.au/functions.html

Dinner: queue up at Mamasita for incredible Mexican (sit at the bar if you can) http://www.mamasita.com.au

Ice Cream: if you have any room left wander over the Spring Street Grocer http://www.springstgrocery.com.au for homemade salted caramel and chilli ice cream

The best holiday destination in Australia? Tasmania – without doubt. Anyone who has been there will know why – anyone who hasn’t been needs to go to find out…its so lovely.

Who inspires you? And why? Our suppliers mostly. We travel frequently to meet with them and its fascinating to see how and where they work. Most of them live in fairly poor countries and most have to deal with adversity, government corruption and logistical nightmares just to run a business. We are so lucky here and are blessed to be able to work with people like this – they keep us grounded.

What is your favourite city in the world? Melbourne!

Introducing Olive Woman

In July, Olive Home packed up her finest things – her designer clothes and precious accessories, her Italian home wares, and her most prized trinkets, and travelled two stores up Given Terrace. She dived in to paint samples and set about creating Olive Woman, a fresh new space for the stylish woman to come and visit, and shop to her heart’s content.

Taking pride of place next to Montrachet, Olive Woman is now the new Home for our favourite Australian designers (and some extra special international friends also!) We’re talking about the beautiful Ginger & Smart and Collette By Collette Dinnigan taking pride of place on one wall, mirrored by Fleur Wood and Suboo on the other. Splashes of vibrancy welcome you as your enter, courtesy of the newest creations available from these stunning designers.

The American powerhouses of colour, Tolani and DL1969 (yes, those jeans that everybody is talking about) compliment these innovative Australian designers perfectly, and create a flow of spectral vibrancy through the middle of the store.

Olive Woman is the long time dream of Paul Alcock, one of the directors of Olive Home. His desire to create a store that changes with the seasons, to go that extra mile in bringing the best in fashion design to Paddington, has been realised and the boys could not be happier!

A beautiful store for a beautiful locale – come and visit us soon!

We are pleased to bring you Cire Trudon – quite possibly the most luxuriously scented candles in the world.

Olive Woman is open 10am – 5pm Monday to Saturday. Phone (07) 3367 3743

F!NK Designs the Four Seasons

New in at Ollie & Lloyd – the Four Seasons Vases by F!NK Design.

In a world where so much is mass-produced, it is refreshing to find Australian companies such as F!NK are keeping their approach to design in-house and in their own hands. We as a company share this passion with F!NK, along with other Australian designers such as Dinosaur Designs and Polli.

We’ve been carrying the iconic F!NK Water Jugs for over a year now and are excited by these stunning new additions to our collection.

The vases, each in three sizes, come in four colours that harness the beauty of the seasons:

Charcoal for Winter; Copper for Autumn; Gold for Summer and Green for Spring.

The Four Seasons by F!INK Design

Perfect as a Vase, of course, but they also make a striking sculptural piece in the home.

Only available at Ollie & Lloyd. Come in and see these truly gorgeous Vases for yourself!

Design Spotlight on PO:

Welcoming back to Ollie & Lloyd we have PO: – an innovative form of design that fits beautifully into ours (and your) world!

Line-Up Vase - $79

This visionary design house works solidly with vibrant colours that epitomise the classic European feel that we love to showcase in store.

With a market that spans worldwide the team of designer at PO: definitely utilise a very particular vision – one that works tirelessly to make the ordinary, into extraordinary.

We’ve focussed primarily this season on the Mondri Series that PO: are famous for – designs inspired by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944).

Composition with Yellow, Blue and Red by Piet Mondrian (1937 - 1942).

Frank Kerdil is the brains behind the Mondrian inspired series and a vital component of the PO: Design house. From the Mondri Vase that is able to be used three different ways, to the Ring Mug which boasts a two-walled structure to retain heat, and a silicone ring around the mug to assist in holding it tightly.

Mondri Vase - $99

Ring Mug (Mondri) - $19

Other pieces we’ve introduced belong to the Bird Series by Carol Jacobs: The Birdrizzlers – a pair of porcelain love birds for oil and vinegar that will easily romanticise any dining table setting.

Birdrizzlers - $39

Also the Bird Salt & Pepper Shakers have proven to be extremely popular alongside the Birdrizzlers – the bird looking skyward carries the salt, whereas the bird pecking the ground is for pepper. Too cute!

Bird Salt & Pepper Shakers - $19

PO: Design – now in store at Ollie & Lloyd.

Massproductions by Chris Martin and Magnus Elebäck

This week’s Design Feature is written by Emma from Ollie & Lloyd.

“Our knowledge and passion is in mass production, hence the name. Our goal is to use industrial processes to create furniture which people can get excited about, something that gives them pride of ownership. You can do that with a hand-crafted piece, but for us the satisfaction comes from achieving it with an industrially produced article”   - Chris Martin.

New to Ollie & Lloyd are the elegant Tio tables and chairs, as designed and manufactured by Stockholm-based team: Chris Martin and Magnus Eleback. Their designs represent a modernist attitude towards manufacturing while also creating products which are tactile, high in quality, and represent a new thought in design. A thought in which beauty can be found not just in exclusivity, but mass production.

Comfortable, stackable and versatile; the Tio tables and chairs lend themselves to a number of different interior styles, and are available in a black or white galvanised wire. They are suitable for indoor and outdoor use and are available in Cafe and Easy style.

Easy Table and Chair (shown on right)

Here in store we have matched the Easy Tio tables and chairs with the brilliant colours of Missoni’s Margherita expresso set, sugar bowl and creamer,  along with the superbly designed “La Cupola” percolator by Alessi (shown below). The Easy table and chairs are a low setting – perfect for a morning newspaper and coffee on the verandah!

The Tio tables and chairs have been featured in a number of design publications, including the current issue of Inside Out Magazine. The pieces are sold individually or in a three piece setting.

Mass Productions are showing at a number of upcoming International Design Fairs, including an installation at Rendez Vous Tradeshow in Paris from the 24th – 26th of June, as well as an exhibition at Saturday in Design in Sydney, which takes place from the 17th – 20th of August.

creature comforts

This week’s Design blog comes to you from Emma, our Ollie & Lloyd store manager. Enjoy!

Bring joy and enchantment into your home with this delightful collection of woodland creatures, soft and colourful textiles, organic accessories and magical tableware.

The Down to the Woods collection of whimsical lamps is designed to evoke the imaginations of children while “recapturing the memories of adults”.

These night lights have a retrospective appeal without coming across as too kitsch, and have featured heavily in a myriad of current Interior Design publications. We have more styles in store, but the cute little bunny rabbit is our favourite!

Toadstool and Bunny Lamps from Down To The Woods

“Luxurious yet practical,” Luna Gallery’s Couch Cardy collection is a range of knitted throws that come in an deluxe choice of colours, textures and patterns. The Tree Blanket, shown here in Chestnut and Feather, is perfect for dressing up a bed, or for cosy nights on the couch! Luna Gallery is an Australian designed and made company with a collection that is suitable for all interiors.

The Couch Cardy Tree Blanket

Venucci brings us a range of “flat-pack” pear trees and moose busts. Ideal for hanging jewellery and seasonal decorations, the pear trees are a perfect centrepiece for your dining table or sideboard and are suitable for creating both eclectic and minimal themes.  The moose heads are great for creating a winter lodge aspect to a room. Alternatively, try painting them in a solid ‘pop’ colour with enamel paint for some pop-art drama!

At Ollie & Lloyd we have the Iittala tableware range by Finnish designer Klaus Haapaniemi, bringing to life his imaginative Taika (magic) illustrations.  Wise Owls, slender foxes and fantasy forests – the Taika range is designed to add a touch of magic to everyday life.  Each piece can be bought separately, and are considered by some to be collectable items.

And in all of our stores we have the adorable Florabelle Moss Rabbits, the set of 3 ceramic rabbits by Venucci, and mushroom sets by Orson & Blake. Shown with the brightly coloured Bubble Rug (Down To The Woods) and Missoni Jerash cushions, this delightful collection of shapes and patterns will warm the heart on a cool winters eve and let imaginations run wild!

dinosaur designs

Over the years we have seen colourful and innovative designs flow in and out of Ollie & Lloyd, with overseas giants such as Alessi and Missoni being what the store is primarily known for. Yet alongside these Italian masters sits an Australian company which, from humble beginnings, has grown into one that works with the highest standards and receives the highest regards. I am of course talking about Dinosaur Designs, and as any one of our Ollie & Lloyd staff can assure you, when a new Dinosaur Designs range is due to be delivered, the anticipation is palpable!

Coral Sea Collection*

The concept of Dinosaur Designs first began when Louise Olsen, Stephen Ormandy and Lianne Rossler met whilst studying at art school in 1983. In 1985 they started building a clientele at Sydney’s Paddington Markets selling hand printed fabrics and jewellery, and within a year were experimenting with resin. By 1996 they had expanded their range into home wares and the rest, as they say, is history. And with each item still being handmade, no two pieces are ever the same. This dedication to the craft is just one of the reasons why we chose to incorporate Dinosaur Designs into our store.

Bird Collection*

Ollie & Lloyd began their affiliation with Dinosaur Designs two years ago and has since become one of the largest stockists in Queensland. We have found that nothing quite equates to the unique vibrancy that is present in each piece.

Moon Collection*

Drawing inspiration from nature is a key component in the design process of the company. We currently have items available in store from the Fungi, Sun, Moon, Bird and Coral Sea collections, along with an extensive range of 2010’s hugely successful Bones collection.

In May we will see the release of their new collection, ‘Insects’, featuring brilliant colours and designs reminiscent of dragonfly wings and scarab beetles. We will announce when it has arrived so stay tuned!
