Let’s chat with Elk master Marnie

Elk has been in the Olive Home family for a few years now and is a much loved brand of our marnie elk head shotstaff and customers. The products have gone from strength to strength and continue to impress us each season.

The new season has just arrive, and It’s like Christmas for a 5 year old. We have had a quick chat to Marnie who is the master behind the Elk brand. She as talked about the inspiration for the new season and given us QLD’s some inside knowledge about the wonderful Melbourne.

Where did your inspiration come from for the SS13/14 collection? I took a photo along the Victorian coast of a sunset earlier in the year. The colours that reflected across the sky were brilliant, clear and so pretty. This photo was printed onto a silk scarf and formed the basis for our palette. You will see hints of these colours right throughout the range from the dusty blues and greens to the bright oranges and acid yellows.

Was it always a dream to become a fashion designer? Or was it something that you fell into? If you are a creative person you innately need to work in a creative environment – or have an outlet. For me the process was quite organic but the path felt natural. I am still driven and inspired by the people around me.

You work in such a fast paced creative industry, how do you motivate your self on a day to day basis? I am lucky to love what I do – that is the greatest motivation. Our growing team at Elk HQ has introduced many people with years of experience behind them at different brands. All comment on how unique Elk is. Much of this is down to the loyal clients we have – most of whom feel like they are a part of our family. This loyalty and closeness with our fans is another great source of inspiration.

Favourite thing to cook? I am going through a bit of Quinoa phase and love to make warm salads with it as the base.

Any chance we could have the recipe? Or is it top secret? Recipe – no such luck. Whatever you have in the fridge topped with creamy goats curd and lovely white balsamic is about as complex as it gets.

Next time we are in Melbourne we need to eat at, drink at and visit? Oh where to start! Let’s pretend you have 24 hours in Melbourne, as a North side girl here is what I would suggest:

Breakfast: South of Johnston for delicious eggs http://southofjohnston.com.au

Post Breakfast Shop: meander along Gertrude Street for independent designers, book shops and galleries

Lunch: Gorski and Jones in Smith Street for a big bowl of warm homemade pasta http://www.gorskiandjones.com

After lunch: a bit more shopping either along Smith Street, Johnston or Brunswick Street (all within waking distance of each other)

Pre Dinner Cocktail: Head into the city and pop into Siglo above The European for a lovely atmosphere and a special view of Spring Street (best in warmer weather)http://www.theeuropean.com.au/functions.html

Dinner: queue up at Mamasita for incredible Mexican (sit at the bar if you can) http://www.mamasita.com.au

Ice Cream: if you have any room left wander over the Spring Street Grocer http://www.springstgrocery.com.au for homemade salted caramel and chilli ice cream

The best holiday destination in Australia? Tasmania – without doubt. Anyone who has been there will know why – anyone who hasn’t been needs to go to find out…its so lovely.

Who inspires you? And why? Our suppliers mostly. We travel frequently to meet with them and its fascinating to see how and where they work. Most of them live in fairly poor countries and most have to deal with adversity, government corruption and logistical nightmares just to run a business. We are so lucky here and are blessed to be able to work with people like this – they keep us grounded.

What is your favourite city in the world? Melbourne!

Can you believe it Spring/Summer has started trickling into Olive Home, we are extremely excited as this season is quite amazing. We have been lucky enough to chat to our designers and find out what the design inspiration was for the 2013/2014 season.

This week we will be featuring Sara Phillips a favourite in the Olive Home family. Sara launched her label in 2007 after working for Jayson Brunsdon and Saba.

The label has beautiful soft silks and whimsical patterns that the hand and eye are drawn to. The collections are strong and feminine created by a strong eye for detail and amazing tailoring.

Where did your inspiration come from for the SS13/14 collection? We looked at roses and their relationship women. We love their fragile yet sturdy nature and that they are the quintessential female flower.

Was it always a dream to become a fashion designer? Or was it something that you fell into? Design has always been in my life, My mother was a textile designer so I was sure I wanted to do design but I was never sure in what aspect.

You work in such a fast paced creative industry, how do you motivate your self on a day to day basis? Because we are always working 1 year or more ahead you are always thinking of whats next and looking towards the next collection. That constant forward thinking keeps us motivated.

Favourite thing to cook? I love cooking anything spicy, the more chilli the better.

Any chance we could have the recipe? Or is it top secret? My favourite cook book at the moment is My Abuela’s Table: An Illustrated Journey into Mexican Cooking By Daniella Germain.

Next time we are in Sydney we need to eat at, drink at and visit? Try Movida in Surry Hills or Spice Temple in the City.

The best holiday destination in Australia? I have to say Melbourne, I love visiting my best friend there.

Who inspires you? And why? The people in my studio inspire me, from my amazing interns to my studio and design manager. I think it important to work with inspiring people.

What is your favourite city in the world? I love Hoi An in Vietnam, It’s a lovely little village and the food is amazing.

New Season

  1. New Season

You may not see it, But you are BEAUTIFUL.

We get hundreds of beautiful women that walk through our doors each week. These women, myself included will often go on about what they perceive as their flaws. When really they are what make you, you.

It’s not often, actually I would say never that you see a beauty products advertising campaign and think, maybe I am great! This Campaign by Dove is truly amazing. Watch for yourself and see how it makes you feel after.

A new direction for Olive Home

As summer approaches faster than you can book an appointment for a spray tan, your wardrobe can often seem a little tired. Weighed down with winter bits and pieces, and if you’re anything like me – woolen dresses have been thrown about hazardously to make room for tanks, while my boots are lined up against the wall waiting to be boxed up again!

So what to do when summer has, in that quintessential Queensland way, slapped us in the face with no warning whatsoever?

EASY! Come and see us in Olive Home!

Elk’s Summer Range is like no other!

Since opening Olive Woman and relocating the majority of our fashion labels into the new store, we’ve been busy directing Olive Home’s fashion focus into a light-hearted, everyday, come-away-and-walk-along-the-beach-at-sunset-with-me way. This breezy, colourful, more bohemian way of thinking and dressing is perfect for Queensland and perfect for us. Think relaxed silks and cottons, floral embroidery and flowing hemlines that not only are beautiful, but are easy on the old purse-strings to (which is always a help!)

Naudic captures the beauty of coastal living.

With this new focus in mind, we’ve taken on some beautiful labels that we’d love to share with you. Alongside Elk, an old Olive Home favourite, you’ll now find gorgeous collections from Naudic, Joanie Loves Chachi, and due for imminent arrival, White Label Noba.

Joanie Loves Chachi – Boho Style at it’s best!

These labels harness the romanticism of warmer weather, those long days that begin tucked under a beach umbrella and end with mojitos overlooking the ocean.  We are very pleased with the collections, it is a point of difference for us and we’re excited to be bringing these labels into Paddington!

Introducing Olive Woman

In July, Olive Home packed up her finest things – her designer clothes and precious accessories, her Italian home wares, and her most prized trinkets, and travelled two stores up Given Terrace. She dived in to paint samples and set about creating Olive Woman, a fresh new space for the stylish woman to come and visit, and shop to her heart’s content.

Taking pride of place next to Montrachet, Olive Woman is now the new Home for our favourite Australian designers (and some extra special international friends also!) We’re talking about the beautiful Ginger & Smart and Collette By Collette Dinnigan taking pride of place on one wall, mirrored by Fleur Wood and Suboo on the other. Splashes of vibrancy welcome you as your enter, courtesy of the newest creations available from these stunning designers.

The American powerhouses of colour, Tolani and DL1969 (yes, those jeans that everybody is talking about) compliment these innovative Australian designers perfectly, and create a flow of spectral vibrancy through the middle of the store.

Olive Woman is the long time dream of Paul Alcock, one of the directors of Olive Home. His desire to create a store that changes with the seasons, to go that extra mile in bringing the best in fashion design to Paddington, has been realised and the boys could not be happier!

A beautiful store for a beautiful locale – come and visit us soon!

We are pleased to bring you Cire Trudon – quite possibly the most luxuriously scented candles in the world.

Olive Woman is open 10am – 5pm Monday to Saturday. Phone (07) 3367 3743
